Champions on the Netball Court

After a spectacular series of games, St Benedict's College U15 Girls Netball team came home as the champions of the Inters B4 division at the Catholic Cup Netball Competition. After many early Tuesday mornings since the start of the year it was clear that the girls were here to play, as they were led onto the court by Co-Captains Jasmine Brown and Mackenzie Reynolds.

They faced a tough test first up against St Ursula's from Toowoomba.  After a very slow start the girls found themselves behind 7-4 at half time. But they came out firing in the second half to quickly gather up the lead and then take an important first win 10-8. The girls carried the momentum from that first win to confidently dispatch their next opponent St Mary's Maryborough by 23-0, then St Peter Claver by 16-5 and St Patrick's by the same score in back to back games. St James were then defeated 17-8 before the girls faced their second real test of the day against St Mary's Kingaroy. In a back and forth battle the girls again produced another outstanding second half performance to run away with a 16-9 victory, before then storming to a 20-2 victory over Southern Cross.

Our final game was against Emmaus College, Jimboomba, both of us undefeated.  Both teams were very well matched from the first whistle and it went goal for goal for much of the game. But the defensive pressure and hard work from the St Benedict's College girls won them several crucial turnovers that were duly converted by our outstanding attack – and the girls showed great courage under pressure as they triumphed 13-10 to bring home our first ever Netball Trophy.

A sincere thanks must go to all of the parents and family members who have supported the girls throughout the year in their commitment to training early in the morning. Secondly, I would like to thank Mr Dominic Clarke for coming along to support the girls, and to score and manage during the carnival. I would also like to thank our umpire for the day, Year 11 student Liliana Robb. Finally, I can only conclude by saying congratulations and thank you to all of the members the 2018 team. These girls can now say they were the very first Netball Champions in the short history of St Benedict's College.
