Mural | Our Story

The Mural by artist Wendy Rix

Designed by Artist Wendy Rix

The mural Our Story is inspired by the values of identity and cultural heritage that underpin the life of St Benedict's College. Designed to evoke the appearance of a stained-glass window, the artwork reflects the idea that all elements are interconnected and belong to a greater whole.

At the centre of the mural is a large meeting place formed by U-shaped figures representing people, symbolising connection to Country both shared and individual. Surrounding the central Cross are twelve circular forms, each containing a distinct symbol. The number twelve holds deep significance, referencing the twelve disciples of Jesus, the twelve monasteries founded by St Benedict, and the Twelve Steps of Humility outlined in The Rule of St Benedict.

Moving clockwise, the symbols represent:

  • God in all Things
  • The Raven, the school mascot
  • The waterways of Redcliffe
  • Service
  • Balance
  • Community
  • The Cross of St Benedict
  • St Scholastica
  • St Hildegard
  • St Maurus
  • St Petronax
  • The Traditional Custodians of the Land

The College houses are woven together throughout the mural using vines and recurring symbols representing people. This reflects the spiritual foundation of the College and its deep connection to the local community through social justice, service, and outreach. The vines symbolise growth and connection, aligning with the purpose of education and the personal development of each individual within the community.

Rustic and natural colour tones are used throughout the artwork to reflect the surrounding environment and express the values of Laudato Si’, particularly care for creation. The College colours are thoughtfully integrated into the background, reinforcing identity and belonging within the overall design.
