Since graduating from St Benedict’s College in 2018, Isabel Fuentes has followed a path defined by creativity, resilience, and a deep passion for connecting with others through performance. Recognised with a Culture Award in their final year at St Benedict's College, Isabel’s journey reflects the power of pursuing what you love, even when the path isn’t always linear. Today, their career has taken them across Australia and around the world, creating unforgettable experiences for audiences of all ages.
Pursuing a Passion for Performance
After graduating, Isabel continued training in performing arts, completing a Diploma of Musical Theatre at the Australian Dance Performance Institute in 2019, followed by an Advanced Diploma of Arts (Musical Theatre and Commercial Dance) at the Queensland College of Dance in 2020.
Entering the industry during the Covid pandemic presented its challenges. With limited opportunities available, Isabel took on a role as a delivery driver at Domino’s, eventually working their way into management. Isabel's commitment to performance never wavered, continuing to audition and take on small performance opportunities wherever possible.
Finding Opportunity in Unexpected Places
A turning point came when Isabel secured a part-time role as a Character Performer and Show Host at Village Roadshow Theme Parks. Working across Movie World, Sea World and Paradise Country, this oppportunity developed valuable experience and industry connections.
This role opened doors to exciting opportunities, allowing Isabel to perform and represent well-loved brands and characters including Looney Tunes, Nickelodeon, Bluey, Nintendo, Camp Quality and The Wiggles across Australia and internationally. It marked the beginning of a flourishing and dynamic career in entertainment.
Inspired to Create Meaningful Moments
Isabel’s love of performance began early, inspired by watching live shows and interacting with characters growing up. However, it wasn’t until their final years at school that they realised this passion could become a career.
What continues to drive Isabel is the opportunity to create meaningful, lasting memories for others. As a performer, they value the connection with audiences — especially the joy and wonder experienced by children and families.
A Career Highlight to Remember
Among many memorable experiences, one stands out as particularly special. Preparing to step on stage for their first performance as a Wiggles character aboard Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas, Isabel listened backstage as the audience erupted with excitement and cheers. It was a full-circle moment, Isabel having grown up watching The Wiggles, now found themselves performing as one of the beloved characters.
Performing on the Global Stage
Isabel’s journey has now taken them overseas, currently living and working in China at Universal Beijing Resort. As a performer in Sing on Tour — a concert-style show based on Illumination’s movie Sing — Isabel brings the character Ash to life, singing live alongside other well-known characters from the film.
The Impact of St Benedict’s
Reflecting on their time at St Benedict’s College, Isabel credits the school with providing meaningful opportunities to perform and create. These experiences helped build the confidence and drive that continue to shape who they are today, both as an individual and as a performer.
Advice for Future Graduates
Isabel shares a powerful message for current students: “Keep pushing and trying for what you want to achieve. It took me about five tries before being offered the contract I’m currently on. There are many people who didn’t follow a traditional university pathway who are now working professionals. There are many different paths to success, so don’t be discouraged if your journey looks different to others.”
