Katie O'Neill

Class of 2017

As a member of St Benedict’s College’s foundation year and first graduating class in 2017, Katie O’Neill’s journey is a testament to following your passions, embracing change, and finding purpose in unexpected places. From working behind the scenes in media to becoming a passionate advocate for early childhood education, Katie’s story reflects both courage and commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

A Unique Path Beyond School

After graduating from St Benedict’s College, Katie initially pursued a creative pathway, studying a Diploma of Cinematic Beauty. This opportunity led her to gain valuable industry experience working with Nine News during the Ekka.  However, like many young people navigating life after school, Katie’s path evolved. Following the challenges of the COVID period, she made the decision to explore a different direction and moved into Early Childhood Education.

Discovering a Calling in Early Education

While Katie always knew she wanted to work in education in some capacity, her journey helped her refine exactly where her passion lay. After beginning a Bachelor of Secondary Education, she quickly realised her true calling was in the early years.  Transitioning into early childhood education, Katie completed a Certificate III traineeship before continuing her studies to achieve her Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care. She is now furthering her knowledge through a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education, with aspirations to one day complete a master’s degree.

For Katie, working with young children felt like the right fit from the start. It's an environment where she could nurture growth, curiosity, and confidence in the earliest stages of life.

Making an Impact and Being Recognised

One of Katie’s proudest achievements since graduating has been her contribution to the early years learning sector. Her dedication and passion for children’s learning were recognised when she was nominated for Educator of the Year.  This acknowledgement stands as a testament to her commitment to providing meaningful learning experiences and her genuine care for the development and wellbeing of the children she works with.

Leading with Passion and Purpose

Today, Katie is the Educational Leader and Room Leader for the 1–2-year-old age group at Adeona Mitchelton. Alongside her leadership role, she continues her studies as she works towards becoming a qualified kindergarten teacher.

In her role as Educational Leader, Katie is actively involved in re-establishing playwork programs as a recognised educational approach within early childhood education. She collaborates with professionals and programs to create environments where children can learn through play, exploration, and meaningful relationships.

Katie is equally passionate about mentoring and supporting fellow educators, encouraging reflective practice and continuous improvement within her team.

The Lasting Influence of St Benedict’s College

Katie credits her time at St Benedict’s College as a pivotal influence in shaping who she is today. The support and encouragement she received from teachers, particularly Mrs Camilleri and Mr White helped her build confidence in her abilities and inspired her to pursue her goals.  Their encouragement and support helped Katie develop confidence and provided motivation to pursue her goals.  The teacher's commitment to student wellbeing and success is something that Katie now carries into her own teaching philosophy. She strives to celebrate every child’s achievement, no matter how big or small, just as her teachers once did for her.

Reflecting on her time at the College, Katie remembers a community that was genuinely invested in student success and provided opportunities for growth both academically and personally.

Advice for Current Students

Katie encourages current St Benedict’s students to make the most of every opportunity that comes their way.  High school, she reminds us, passes quicker than expected and many opportunities only arise once. By stepping outside their comfort zones and embracing new experiences, students can discover more about themselves and shape the paths they want to follow.

A Grateful Reflection

Looking back, Katie is deeply grateful for the foundation St Benedict’s College provided. The experiences, friendships, and mentorship she received during her time at the College have played a significant role in who she is today.  Katie's journey is a powerful reminder that success isn’t always a straight path but with passion, determination, and a willingness to adapt, it can lead to a truly fulfilling career.
